Morgan ISD is committed to providing special education services that support students with disabilities in reaching their full potential. Special education refers to specially designed instruction, provided at no cost to families, that addresses the individual learning needs of a student with a disability. These services may take place in a classroom, at home, in hospitals or other institutions, or in specialized settings, and can also include adapted physical education.
Students may receive services once they have gone through a referral process and a full and individual evaluation. In addition to instruction, Morgan ISD offers related services that may include transportation, speech therapy, occupational and physical therapy, adaptive physical education, counseling, and work-study opportunities for eligible students.
To qualify, students must be evaluated under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004 (IDEA) and meet the eligibility criteria for one or more of the following conditions:
-
Intellectual disability
-
Hearing impairment (including deafness)
-
Speech or language impairment
-
Visual impairment (including blindness)
-
Emotional disturbance
-
Orthopedic impairment
-
Autism
-
Traumatic brain injury
-
Other health impairment
-
Specific learning disability
-
Deaf-blindness
-
Multiple disabilities
Instruction provided through special education is adapted in content, teaching methods, or delivery to meet each child’s unique needs. These modifications, along with accommodations and supports, ensure students have access to the general education curriculum and the opportunity to achieve the same academic standards as their peers.
